Farriery

About

Chris Pedley AWCF

Chris is a registered Master Farrier. He passed his Associate Farriery exams and is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, London.

Chris’ first job was shoeing racehorses and transporting them to race courses all over the country. This was for trainer Jack Berry, who had a large yard near Lancaster.

On returning to Harrogate Chris soon developed a busy farrier round, shoeing different types of horses for a wide variety of disciplines.

In his spare time Chris has trained and driven pacers and trotters at harness race tracks throughout the North of England.

As the shoeing business became busier and spare time became scarce the pacers had to go. Over the years Chris has had the opportunity through his many contacts to participate in many different aspects of the equestrian world from team Chasing to polo, though his current interests are in show jumping and hunting.

The Forge at Follifoot Park Riding Centre was built in the early 1990s and opened up the ability to train apprentices. Chris is currently training his seventh apprentice, previous apprentices are now successful farriers in their own right. Two of his apprentices represented the country at international level, and two others passed their exams with honors. Phil Kirkby has gone on to be a successful race horse trainer, whilst Jon Atkinson (Chris’ first apprentice) is one of the worlds leading Farriery tool makers.

Toby Pedley AWCF

Toby (Chris’ son) was keen to follow in his fathers footsteps from an early age. He was determined to become a farrier and spent his childhood at the Forge and Riding  Centre.

Toby has ridden from a young age being particularly keen on showjumping and hunting.

Toby attended Myerscough College and served his apprenticeship with Garry Harland at Spofforth Forge.

Toby had always aspired to be on the England Farrier Apprentice Team and in 2015 he achieved his aspiration. Following the England Trials, he won an award to compete in the World Champion Blacksmith Competition, in Utah, USA, where he and Chris competed successfully. He then competed at the Internationals where he and the team won every class.

In 2015 Toby was Champion Apprentice at the Yorkshire Show and he and a team mate, Tom Holliday, won the British Team Pairs, at the British Championship at Countryside Live.

Toby qualified as a farrier in December 2015.

Following advanced training Toby passed his AWCF in 2022

Chris and Toby have been privileged to work with top class trainers, vets and farriers from around the world and regularly attend and participate in many clinics, seminars and demonstrations, keeping up to date with modern materials and techniques.
